In Italy electric arc furnaces (EAF) industries represent a relevant industrial activity, mainly in the north of Italy where there are about 25 production plants. These production plants pose a rather challenging problem related to both their environmental impact as well as the worker's exposure to toxic pollutants. This results in a requirement of reducing pollutant emission during the production cycle, with particular reference to the atmospheric emissions. The electric arc furnace itself is the main responsible for atmospheric pollutant production, which is represented not only by dust and fumes (mainly derived from oxides nucleation and condensation) but also by heavy metals and PAH. This can be easily understood since the raw material used in EAF industries is scrap, which is often contaminated by oils and plastics. Atmospheric emissions from EAF industries can be roughly classified into collected and fugitive. The formers are emissions captured by a suitable ventilation system, while the latter escape from this system and enter the environment. The ventilation system usually involves a primary system capturing emissions directly from the furnace and a secondary one that should capture all the emissions not controlled by the primary one. Both these systems lead the emission to a suitable abatement device able to remove more than 99% of the pollutant. Therefore, the environmental impact of the collected emissions is often negligible. In this work different solutions for dust control are discussed with reference to measurements carried out in real-size plants showing the relevance of fugitive emissions in evaluating the overall environmental impact of EAF industries.
