For the safety of pedestrians inside narrow tunnels managed by the Shikoku RegionalrnDevelopment Bureau, an investigation was performed to determine how drivers respond whenrninformed of the presence of pedestrians. A driving test was also performed to understand thernactions that drivers take and the issues that arise when a driver learns that a pedestrian is presentrnin a tunnel. We considered how to best provide information to ensure the safety of pedestrians.rnWe present a summary of the main results of the driving tests and describe an effective andrnefficient method for improving pedestrian safety.
