This paper describes the development of cost-efficient, highly accurate and easilyrnmaintainable 3D navigable databases for mobile solutions. Those efficient productionrnprocesses results in affordable 3D map products, fulfilling the demands of the TelernAtlas customers and stimulate a timely market introduction of 3D map applicationsrnsignificantly.rnLocation Based Services (LBS) are up and running and successful in the market.rnDigital maps are an important component for these services. Current available digitalrnmaps are based on requirements from car navigation with relative ly little attention forrnmap display. Apart from some basic areas like woods and water only the line work ofrnthe road network is displayed.rnHowever, pedestrian represent next to car drivers an important user group of LBS.rnThis has implications for the map, especially for map display. Using an in-carrnnavigation system, a car driver gets his GPS position improved with inertialrninformation, so there is no doubt of his position and no doubt of the direction he isrnlooking and heading. This is different for pedestrians using LBS. These get theirrnposition from GPS only. As a result the pedestrians do not know in which directionrnthey are looking.rnThis shortcoming can be solved by improving orientation possibilities enhancing thernstandard digital road maps with features such as road areas, sidewalk areas and 3Drnrepresentations of the buildings.rn3D representations of buildings can be made with varying levels of detail [1]. Thernfirst level of detail is the so called generic block model, rather a nice technical resultrnthan something which appeals to many users. In order to arrive at a quasi realisticrnrepresentation of the city, specific roof and front texture are assigned to the blocks.rnThis paper describes cost-efficient methods, using image sequences from Tele AtlasrnMobile Mapping vehicles, to produce the 3D building information.rnHigh end 3D City Models are in general very expensive. Because costs will vary withrnthe level of detail achieved, different methods, leading to different levels of detail willrnbe included. The level of detail of the 3D representations of the buildings has to bernsuch that on crucial decision points the user will recognise the building in onernglimpse.rnBy using the Tele Atlas Mobile Mapping Technology [2] and following a componentrnbased production, Tele Atlas is able to produce cost-efficient low and high-end 3DrnCity Map databases. These will reflect in affordable 3D map products fulfilling thernrequirements of an enhanced map display. The availability of affordable 3D productsrnis expected to accelerate the market introduction of 3D map applications significantly.
