Two-dimensional polymers and their layered frameworks (covalent organic frameworks: COFs) are a class of crystalline porous materials that allow an atomically precise integration of components into a 2D or 3D periodicity. 1 The recent synthetic progress has shown that 2D COFs are a versatile platform for designing functional materials with various applications. We have poineered the design and synthesis of π-electronic COFs by integrating various arenes and large π molecuels into the 2D polygon skeletons.2-19 In this talk, we focus on our challenge for the molecular design of COFs with periodically ordered and bicontinuously segregated p-n heterojunctions, which would provide a new molecular configuration and mechanism for optoelectronics and photovoltaics.
