The paper presents a procedure for analysis of lateral resistance of a railway track. The lateral load/displacements diagrams have been obtained by shifting a real track using a tamping machine, which is usually used to correct the vertical geometry of a track. The measurements are simulated using a 3-D FE model of a track. Based on experimental data and results of numerical simulation, the model parameters related to ballast lateral resistance are determined using an optimisation technique. The ballast parameter identification procedure has been verified using measurement data with and without extra vertical load applied to a track. Finally, a track model with the obtained ballast parameters has been applied to determine train speed limits for a renewed track basing on the safety criteria given in UIC Leaflet 720. The results are presented and discussed.
