In order to progress in our understanding of combustion in turbulent flows, Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) are ideally suited. When considering such problems as pollutant emission or stability limits, detailed models must generally be employed to describe the combustion and diffusion processes with an acceptable accuracy. Due to the huge cost of such simulations, they have been generally restricted to two-dimensional configurations up to now, leading to unsolved questions concerning the applicability of the obtained results. Considering the lasting growth in computer power and the latest progress in algorithms and programming languages, we recently decided to develop a three-dimensional DNS code, with the aim of keeping reasonable computing times. This is made possible mainly by combining a low-Mach number approach with a new and accurate reduction technique for the chemistry. Some examples of the obtained results are shown in this paper.
