Besides RANS-techniques, large eddy simulation in three dimensions is nowadays used to study turbulent flow and mixing as well as combustion in various configurations. This paper firstly aims to present some results based on the conserved scalar method in connection with the concept of sub-grid scale pdf for combustion-LES. The second objective is to provide an evaluation of the combustion-LES. To illustrate these, LES results of a range of flows including DLR-flame, counterflow configuration and jet in cross flow are presented. The performance and limitations of submodels are evaluated and discussed. It is shown that LES is able to deliver good results very close to available measured data. In spite of its high computational cost, LES represents a suitable tool for prediction of combusting flows. Efforts to extend the applicability of LES in complex configurations of technical importance under conceivable computing time must therefore be encouraged.
