Imaging logging has become a research subject attracting wide attention. The key point is how to identify the fractures with the imaging information of the wells. Usually, the measured images are processed and the image noise is removed. Then edge detection technologies are used to determine those image pixels representing the fractures. Curve fitting technologies are used further. There is a shortcoming of the traditional methods: image enhancing and fracture identifying are performed independently. To overcome this shortcoming, a fracture identification algorithm is proposed below. Local fractures take the plane shape. The common line of a fracture plane with the well wall is an ellipse which taking the form of a sine curve after the unfolding up of the well wall. To simplify the identification problem, it reduced the task of fitting out a sine curve into a series of tasks of fitting out a line. For a tested angle γ of the fracture plane to the paper plane, a line rather a sine curve was fitted out. Found out the optimal γ which produced the minim total distance of the fracture sampling points to the fitted line. A real problem was analyzed. The results showed a good performance.
