The problem of achieving PPM (pulse position modulation) symbolnsynchronization using no reference marker but a finite span of slotnobservations is considered. The optimum maximum-likelihood (ML) decisionnstatistics and the suboptimum, easily implementable maximum correlationndecision statistics are derived for PPM symbol synchronization for thenPoisson and Gaussian channels. Simulation results presented show thatnthe PPM symbol synchronization probability performances of both decisionnstatistics are practically identical for moderately high signal-to-noisenratios
