Although the high-speed rail (HSR) program in the USA is still in its infancy, there exists a series of challenges for the railroad industry. Among them, rail safety is the top priority. Passenger train derailments due to track buckling or rail break are devastating and very costly.The consequences for high-speed operations are even more detrimental due to potentially high fatalities, since track bucking is often initiated by train movements. In North America, major railroads have all instituted some type of rail stress management programs in order to prevent track buckling or rail break related derailments.Certain technologies are applicable for the proposed U.S. high-speed operations. New technologies and maintenance practices also need to be adopted to meet the needs of high speed rail operations. This paper deals with rail stress management, especially oriented towards high speed rail operations.lt is focused on temperature induced longitudinal stresses in rails. Following a brief discussion of heat-related rail stress issues, existing technologies and practices in North America will be reviewed.The rail temperature and stress monitoring system and a rail temperature prediction model for Amtrak's Northeast Corridor will be discussed in detail. Potential applications of the existing and emerging technologies to the HSR are finally summarized.
