1. Synthesis and structure : A laser-assisted catalytic growth (LCG) approach has been developed for the synthesis of single crystal compound semiconductor nano wires with controlled chemical composition, doping, and size. 2. Electronic properties: Transport studies show that individual nano wires are conductive and can be doped into n- or p-type semiconductors in a controlled way, and thus opens up exciting opportunities in nanoscale electronics. 3. Nanowire devices: Various nanoscale electronic and opto-electronic devices, including FETs, p-n junctions, LEDs and photodetectors, have been assembled from nano wire building blocks. 4. Hierarchical Assembly: Rational approaches have been developed to assemble nanowires into highly integrated device arrays.
