Investigating the influence of road noise on people’s perceptions and health based on physiological indices and blood changes

This study was to evaluate people’s real-time physiological feedback responses when exposed to various levels of road noise. 16 participants were recruited for an experiment with 5 levels of traffic noise stimulation ranging from 60 dBA to 80 dBA and evaluated 4 physiological feedback responses, namely, respiration, blood volume pulse (BVP), finger temperature, and skin conductance. In addition, rat experiment was then to evaluate whether long-term exposure to road noise stress induced changes in the immune system. An animal experiment was conducted on 6 Sprague Dawley rats to observe changes in 9 hematological and biochemical indices as follows: White blood cell (WBC) count, percentage of monocytes, percentage of eosinophils, percentage of basophils, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, total protein, albumin, and triglycerides. The results of the human experiment indicated that as the noise volume increased, BVP was elevated but finger temperature declined (P<0.05). The results of the animal experiment revealed that long-term exposure to a high-noise environment induced a change in WBC count, and that triglyceride levels may be associated with noise-induced hearing impairment. In the human experiment, the amplification of noise caused the BVP and finger temperature to change significantly. In the animal experiment, the acute stress caused by noise increased theWBC count.
