A study of the effects of aircraft noise on people in local outdoor recreational areas was conducted in conjunction with the relocation of Norway’s main airport in 1998. Most studies of the relation between noise exposure and annoyance have examined one setting in isolation from other settings. Little is known about how the combined strains from noise in different everyday settings influence how well people cope with noise in any given setting. The aim of this study was to investigate if people who are annoyed by noise at home react differently to aircraft noise in outdoor recreational areas than people who are not annoyed by noise at home. Field studies were conducted both before and after the change in an outdoor recreational area that experienced an increase in noise exposure due to the relocation of the main airport. The relation between annoyance and aircraft noise exposure (L_(Aeq, air)) in the outdoor recreational area was tested using multivariate linear regression analysis that controlled for variables describing noise annoyance at home, the situation (before/after the change), and the recreational context.
