Lightweight floor constructions often suffer from poor sound and vibration properties in thelow frequency area that are annoying to humans. The dynamic properties of the floors aresuch that they possess low, lightly damped, natural frequencies. Humans are very sensitive tothat kind of vibrations and it is of great interest to find simple methods that reduce floorvibrations and thereby increase the comfort for habitants. A lightweight steel joist floor,equipped with a resilient ceiling mounted to the floor by soft ceiling joists, serves as the testobject. By using a piece of strategically located visco-elastic material connected to the ceilingjoists, which is designed using a finite element model for an optimal position and size, it isdemonstrated that the damping of the floor is increased. The results show that resonant modesof the type where floor and ceiling are moving out of phase to each other are nearlyeliminated. Modes having floor and ceiling moving in phase to each other are less affected,although increment in damping ratio is noticeable.
