Approaching electric vehicles sound for pedestrians based on ease of detection by fluctuation of motor sound

Since the motor of an electric vehicle (EV) is quiet, it has the disadvantage that pedestriansdo not notice EVs approaching them. An EV was designed to play an approaching sound tosolve this problem. However, it has not been solved yet. This study proposes anapproaching EVs sound for pedestrians by using the fluctuation of motor sound for ease ofdetection of approaching EVs as well as synthesizing a sound for warning. The motorsound with characteristics of the fluctuation of the gasoline engine was synthesized using aprocedure proposed in our previous study. In that study, the synthesized motor sound iscalled “fluctuating motor sound”. That study investigated the effects of fluctuating motorsound on the perception of loudness. Here, we clarify the effect of fluctuation on theperception of loudness. Moreover, we observed that there are significant differences amongonly experimental results based on only fluctuation of amplitude with onset time. Inaddition, whether the fluctuating motor sound makes it easy to notice approaching vehicleswas investigated. We found that the fluctuating motor sound elicited by only fluctuation ofamplitude with onset time is effective to enable people to notice the approaching vehicles.
