Exposure to both environmental noise and air pollution has been associated with cardiovascularhealth effects. Until now, few studies have considered both stressors simultaneously. Two largestudies were carried out investigating the relationship between road traffic noise and severalcardiovascular health end points, while taking air pollution exposure into account.Exposure to road traffic noise and air pollution (particulate matter; PM10) was assessed at a highlevel of detail for subjects in large ongoing cohort studies in Groningen (~ 40 000 subjects) andin the Eindhoven region (~ 18 000 subjects). Detailed spatial data (e.g. traffic characteristics,buildings and their height, screening objects), were input for road traffic noise and air pollutioncalculation using state-of-the-art modeling techniques, in combination with air pollutionmonitoring data. Data on cardiovascular endpoints, risk factors and confounders was collected inthe cohort studies by questionnaires, measurements and hospital admission databases.Analyses were carried out to investigate the association between residential road traffic noise andair pollution exposures and several cardiovascular health endpoints, including hypertension andhospital based incidence of cardiovascular diseases. Results and insights with respect toassociations with morbidity will be presented and discussed.
