A developing and growing field for Knowledge-Based or Expert Systems is in decision support. Decision making constitutes a significant part of the work that is left to humans within the product introduction process, partly due to the increasing level of automation in manufacturing [Hollnagel, 90]. The decision making processes in design are now the focus of attention in order to apply the benefits of expert system approaches to encapsulate proven experience and to shorten the time to market. The design of an expert system embraces different types of tasks, i.e. identification, conceptualisation, formulation, implementation and validation [Waterman, 86]. In order to ensure or promote the true usefulness of an expert system, its design also has to consider aspects related to its robustness, modularity and expandability. This paper discusses the validation and expandability aspects regarding the development of a prototype expert system for design of fluid power systems [Silva, 97a;Silva, 97b]. In the task of validation, the work reports the tests of the prototype carried out with engineering students to verify the general system acceptability. This includes the metrics definition and test description. For the expandability objective, the paper shows how direct increments in the present knowledge base can be achieved without requiring a great change in the system structure. Possible enhancements involving more radical changes are discussed, including some paths to follow based on the experience obtained from the prototype development.
