Abstract: The advent of sealed CO$-2$/ lasers has significantlyincreased industrial laser applications during the last5 years. The main advantages of this type of laser arethe compact footprint, robust all-metal construction,no maintenance and low operating costs. Theapplications of sealed CO$-2$/ lasers in themicroelectronics industry can be broadly classifiedinto four major categories: Ceramic Processing forThick/Thin Films, Printed Circuit Boards and FlexCircuit Board Drilling and Routing, Solder Mask Cuttingfor SMT and Microwelding for the packaging industry.This paper summarizes potential applications for sealedCO$-2$/ lasers in the microelectronics industry.Detailed process capability with speeds and thicknesseswill be presented and comparisons will be made to otherlaser and conventional fabrication techniques.!3
