Parking in a busy parking garage is a time consuming and frustrating affair. The situation is worse when the garage is nearly full. In this paper, a novel customer friendly parking system (PS) which strives to eliminate the parking problem and reduce traffic congestion inside busy parking garages is proposed. The PS not only guarantees a slot to customer, but also assigns a slot based on customer preference. In addition, PS is inherently resistant to misparking. The proposed parking system has a simple touch screen user interaction mechanism at the entrance of the garage which is connected to a central mainframe. The central mainframe houses the principle logic concerned with all PS related operations. Slot allotment in the PS is cumulatively based on availability of slots, user preference and time required to park in a particular slot. PS also encompasses a monitoring mechanism to continuously monitor the activities in the parking garage. The proposed monitoring mechanism employs fixed cameras and a mobile robotic camera which traverses the entire parking garage to keep track of all vehicles present in the garage. As a consequence of reduced traffic congestion, carbon emission in the garage is lowered, thereby making way for an environmental friendly garage. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed parking system.
