Five different types of machines are commonly used to study elastohydrodynamic lubrication: four-ball, ball on disc, FB2, gear and the disc machines. The two-disc machine available at the Laboratoire de Mecanique des Contacts (LMC) was originally designed 30 years ago. Using this test rig, traditional tests are possible: traction curve measurement to evaluate the tribological behaviour of lubricants, scuffing limit determination for a given material and lubricant combination, rolling contact fatigue investigations and material and coating resistance measurement under prescribed contact conditions. Finally, recent modifications of the machine allow new simulations: traction curves at low temperatures, evaluation of the influence of oil contamination on rolling contact fatigue and torque measurements on high speed journal bearings.
