In this study, tribological tests in subtle aqueous solutions were carried out to examine the effect of dissolved ions in water for the development of hydraulic pumps and valves using basically not ceramics but metals. AISI 304 stainless steel disks were slid against alumina balls in controlled solutions. Solutions contained principal ions dissolved in tap water such as Cl~-, SO_4~(2-), Ca~(2+) etc and their concentration was as subtle as tap water. Electrochemical control and measurement were also performed to elucidate the effect of the electrochemical factor. As a result, anions had predominant influence on wear and friction especially under high load conditions; Cl~- and SO_4~(2-) protected the surface with their own corrosion products and NO_3~- accelerated wear. The effect of cations was insignificant. The electrochemical approach revealed synergetic phenomena of mechanical and electrochemical factors and formation of a tribo-corrosion film.
