Extrusion machining combines cutting with simultaneousrnextrusion using an additional constraining tool to induce veryrnlarge and well-characterized strains. Unlike conventionalrnextrusion, accurate analytical models exist for extrusionrnmachining to calculate values of effective strain, strain rate, andrntemperature rise as a function of processing parameters.rnAdditionally, the size, shape, and microstructural effects of arnsecondary shear zone that forms due to friction during extrusionrnmachining have been characterized. This secondary shear zonerncan be manipulated by varying processing parameters, and canrnproduce a severely inhomogeneous microstructure. Thisrnmicrostructure is also seen during conventional extrusion, as thernmaterial on the outside of the extrudate is strained more than therninside material, potentially causing an incomplete recrystallizationrnacross the face of the product. The secondary shear effect in thernextrusion machining process is utilized to reproduce therninhomogeneous microstructure seen in conventional extrusion inrnorder to better understand the recrystallization behavior duringrnAA7050 extrusion.
