The use of lithium-ion batteries to power electronic equipment used on board the Space Shuttle and International Space Station has just begun. The first lithium-ion battery used for space applications was a commercial Canon BP 927 camcorder battery that had Sony 18650 lithium-ion cells in a 2P2S configuration. The cells and battery were tested to determine their performance and safety under normal and abuse conditions, respectively. The battery and cells underwent capacity testing, overcharge, overdischarge, heat-to-vent, external short circuits, internal short circuits, vibration and drop testing. The battery tests involved testing of the smart protective circuit board in the battery to verify its protective functions. The battery and cells are safe under all abuse conditions except at temperatures above 150 ℃ or when heavily crushed.
