Since several years now, GPS as a powerful high accuracy positioning and navigation systemrnhas an enormous impetus on all fields of navigation applications. Nevertheless, today GPS isrnnot regarded as being a system which can be certified as sole means of navigation for safetyof-rnlife applications, in particular for aviation and maritime purposes. Following an IALArnrecommendation, it is required to use two independent and complementary systems for anyrnmaritime applications, for example DGPS and LORAN-C.rnAlthough the absolute accuracy of LORAN-C is not very high (approximately 200-400 m), thernsystem is superior to non-augmented GPS with regard to availability and integrity. Notably,rnLORAN-C's low-frequency signal properties show completely different immunity to noise,rnfading and interference to the corresponding properties of GPS. For those reasons, theserncomplementary system features form a good basis for integrated (hybrid) navigation systems.rnRemarkably, LORAN-C in Europe is under civil control which gives an importantrncontribution to the institutional question [ 1 ].rnIn 1999, Avionik Zentrum Braunschweig together with Reelektronika from the Netherlands,rnhas investigated the potential of combined (hybrid) (D)GPS/LORAN-C navigation receiversrnwithin the frame of a project partly sponsored by the European Commission. This paperrnpresents the results of a recent market survey especially reflecting the current world widernsituation of LORAN-C.
