Detection and Minimisation of Sky-wave Interference in Loran-C Receivers

Sky-wave interference commonly affects Loran-C receivers' performance. The sky-wavernrejection methods employed in current designs of receivers are not optimal because they usernfixed, worst-case, sample timing. This paper reports on novel signal processing techniquesrnfor measuring in real time the delay and strength of the sky-wave components of a Loran-Crnsignal relative to the ground-wave pulse. Their merits and limitations will be discussed. Therneffectiveness of these techniques will be assessed by theoretical analysis, computer simulationrnunder a range of realistic conditions, and finally, by the use of real-time off-air signals in arnprototype receiver. This work establishes a basis on which to design a Loran-C receiverrncapable of adjusting its sampling point adaptively to the optimal value in a constantlychangingrnsky-wave environment. Such receivers promise to improve significantly thernaccuracy and reliability of positioning under adverse operational conditions.
