Fields like exhaust-gas turbo charging,rnelectronics, emission after-treatment andrninjection/combustion have been recognized asrnessential core technology fields by variousrnengine manufacturers. Consequently, injectionrnis the most effective key technology for thernadherence of decreasing exhaust and smokernemission limits for further decreasing fuelrnconsumption as well as increasing powerrnoutput per cylinder. The introduction of thernworldwide first electronic common-railrninjection system by L'Orange GmbH inrnAugust 1997 made the mtu/DDC Series 4000rnan extreme success. Thus, the next applicationsrnaim to engine types with bigger cylinder boresrnin the range of high speed and medium speedrnengines. Today, L'Orange offers common railrninjection systems for ten different engine typesrnwith cylinder bores from 160 mm up torn500 mm in the test field or the developmentrnstage.rnThis article illustrates the status of the productrnapplications for diesel, micro-pilot and waterrnas well as heavy fuel operations. Further, itrnwill illustrate - in the context of arntechnological strategy - how in the range ofrnmedium speed engines after initial sheerrnretrofit solutions now even incrementallyrnconsequent for common rail applicationsrndeveloped, financially viable engines can bernmade possible.
