Sulphur emissions from ship operations are increasingly problematic when viewed relative tornthe reductions achieved by shoreside industry over the past decade. Low Sulphur diesel fuel,rnthe most common solution for Sox emission has serious drawbacks in the marine industry.rnSome of the concerns over distillate fuels include fuel cost and availability. In addition, there isrnevidence that combustion of high-grade distillate fuel in the shipping industry representsrnhigher CO2 per cargo mile if refining energy is included in the analysis. Regardless, it isrnundeniable that the industry has not adopted this solution in the open ocean where thernmajority of fuel is burned. It is our view that palatable alternative to shipowners, encouraging arngreater buy-of-pipe solution to Sox control from the industry.rnIn order to demonstrate the technology of an end-of-pipe solution to Sox emissions, a pilotrnplant Sox/soot EcoSilencer is being developed onboard a Canadian passenger ferry. Thern1500kW diesel genset used in this trial is burning 3.5% sulphur heavy fuel. The EcoSilencerrnsystem consists of an in-stack unit for contacting exhaust and seawater using a patentpendingrnprocess developed by DME, and a water treatment skid for separating soot from thernrecirculated seawater, and regulating the system pH and water levels. The water treatmentrnsystem is designed to filter water on a continuous basis in the system, and to provide outletrnwater that is cleaned to an environmentally safe level. As part of this project, we have lookedrnat methods for water treatment, and the potential outcomes forms of water handling.
