Gas turbines have recently made inroads into the commercial fast ferry andrncruise ship markets, having dominated prime mover selection for the world’srnmost technologically advanced navies for over thirty years.rnIncreasingly stringent environmental restrictions are beginning to have arnmajor impact on vessel operations. This is influencing the choice of primernmover, and the passenger vessel industry is undertaking more innovativernways of achieving the right balance between environmental compliance andrnrevenue maximisation.rnRecognised advantages of gas turbine for such applications include highrnpower-to-weight and power-to-volume ratios, low emissions, low noisernsignature, reduced structural noise, lower onboard maintenance load, andrnrapid start and stop. Other issues are less well understood, such as thernoverall turbine maintenance pattern, cyclic and creep life implications forrncommercial operations, and the performance of gas turbines away from fullrnpower and under varying ambient temperatures.rnTaking a highly successful aero gas turbine and moving it into the marinernarena is a significant undertaking. The Trent 800, which has the largest sharernof the Boeing 777 market will be used to illustrate this as it is currently beingrnmodified to produce a 30 MW marine variant, the MT30.
