Powder mixtures of air-atomized pure aluminium and AlB2 were mechanically alloyed (MA)rnusing a vibrational ball mill to produce Al100-x(AlB2)x, where X = 15, 30, 50. Mechanicallyrnalloyed powders were consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). Mechanochemicalrnreactions of the MA powders after various heat treatments were studied. The mechanicalrnproperties of the SPS materials were evaluated by hardness and compression testing.rnThe Al50(AlB2)50 powder exhibited a Vickers hardness greater than 400 after milling for 64rnh. Formation of Al3BC and γ-Al2O3 occurred in MA powders after heating at 773 K for 24 h.rnNo significant softening of the MA powders was observed after heating at 773 K for 24 h.rnFull densification of the SPS materials from MA powders of Al85(AlB2)15 was achievedrnusing an applied pressure of 49 Mpa at 873 K for 1 h. The room temperature compressivernproof stress of SPS-consolidated Al85(AlB2)15 was 520 Mpa and 620 Mpa after 4 h and 8 hrnof MA, respectively.
