From 1993 at U. S. Steel Kosice, blast furnaces #2 and #3 are equipped with a coal injection system. The decision to build this equipment was made after economic calculations determined it would be more strategically advantageous to build a new modern facility for coal injection than to overhaul #2 coke battery. In the nineties, the yearly consumption of pulverized coal injection (PCI) was about 280 0001 of dry coal, which represented a specific PCI rate of approximately 100 to 135 kg/thm. Whereas the price difference between coal and metallurgical coke is quite big, the investment into building the coal injection facility returned within 3 years since its start-up and in next years since then it brings costs saving for production of hot metal in U. S. Steel Kosice. In addition, by applying PCI injection technology to Kosice blast furnaces, technological conditions of blast furnaces operating showed improvements as well: 1. production increased an average of + 400 to 500 t/day, 2. improvement of pig iron production economics not only because of replacing the metallurgical coke by PCI, but also because of decreasing of total fuel rate for production of It of hot metal, 3. blast furnace gas utilization increased with ETA CO values around 48%, 4. the running of blast furnace is more regular, above all by regular burden descend, etc.
