Variations of void ratio and differences in initial fabric within a specimen are principal reasons for the dependence of the presponse of laboratory speciments of granular materials upon the method of sample preparation. This paper describes new procedures which employdigital image processing and analysis techniques to quantify the initial fabric and uniformity of cohesionless soil specimens. For example, variations inthe distribution of voids and particles are quantified using an automated implementation of Oda's local void ratio distribution methodology. The use of image processing methods is illustrated with the results of evaluations on an Ottawa 20-30 sand specimen which had its initial fabric "fixed" using a resin impregnation procedure. The rsults demonstrate that parameters such as uniformity, and initial and evolving fabric can be readily evaluated in an eficient and repeatable manaer using automated image analysis procedures.
