Intraplate earthquakers occur away from tectonic plate boundaries in areas of low and moderate seimicity, such as Australia. The occurreneces of these intraplate events appear randomly in both space and time. The conventional empirical approach of obtaining response spectra for these regions is often problematic due to the typical lack of representative strong motion data. The alternative seismological mode, which was originally developed in the United states, addresses the physical processes in the generation of earthquake ground motions and hence does not rely on indigeneous storng motion data in te prediction of earthquake excitations. the model has been futher develop by the autlors to obtain rearthquake response spectra for rock sites and bedorck. A separate procedure has been developed to predict response spectra which take into account the effects of resonance in the soil. Such recnetly developed procedures ae summarised in this paper.
