摘要

The Merchant-Ranking formula is a simple approach for calculating the failure load of a frame s ubjected to increasing loads and constant ambient temperature. It takes account of the interaction of s tability and strength and the calculated failure load is close to that obtained using seocnd order elasto-plastic finite element a nalysis. This paper presents a novel approach to predict the fire resistance of steel frames using the Merchant-Rankine formula. The predictions for a serices of six frames are compared with the finite element analyses and actual test results. Apart from one test result, the comparison shows that the application of this formula to frames subjected to fire conditions yields consistently good agreement with finite ellement method and actual test results.
