Prediction of deflections of burrinjuck dam using finite element analysis

Burrinjuck Dam is a concrete gravity dam located in a narrow gorge on the Murrumpidgee River in NSW. The maximum heith of the dam is 93 m above the lowest point of the foundation, and the maximum base width is 61 m. The crest lenth of the non-overflow section between the sector gates is 152 m and the total length of the dam is 233 m. Plummets and targets were used in the dam to monitor the vertical and horizontal movement of the dam at a number of locations during and after extensive upgrading w orks. The data collection was commenced before the upgrading started and almost 8 years of data were available. This paper outlines the deflections measured in the dam due to te,perature variations and comparison of the measured thermal deflections with those predicted from a finite element analysis of the dam.
