An investigation of symmetrical columns subject to combined tension and biaxial bending using assumptions commonly adopted for compression columns, reveals that under small eccentricity abrupt curvature transition ad prementure failure may occur. A limited testing programme appears to supprt the theoretical analysis. Precautonary design measures are suggested.
