Abstract: Inverse scattering is used to solve the general problem of finding an applied rf field to produce a desired selective excitation profile for MRI. The formalism is used to calculate the exact, closed form solutions to the waveforms which produce a collection of slice profiles, the limit of which is a rectangular section. These solutions are effective at producing waveforms for excitation, refocusing, or inversion pulses. The incorporation of bound states in the inverse scattering problem allow for the calculation of excitation pulses with phase control. !7
