This paper is a discussion on the changes that the UK National Grid Company plc (NGC) has faced since its privatisation in 1990, specifically from a system control perspective. It explains the task faced by management as tighter regulatory controls were placed on its business, and how these new challenges were met by innovative and far-sighted plans. It also includes a frank account of the managerial lessons learnt to date.
