The Yuayo Municipality, located in the northeastern Zhejiang Province, has per capita water resources of 1300 m3 and 430 m3 per capita in the north plain. Since 2001, the economic type of sprinkler and drip system have been studied in this municipality. There have been many innovations on the sprinkler and drip techniques. They included replacing steel pipe with PE pipe, use river network for substituting the main pipe, replace pumping station with movable pumping set as well as to adopt small scale irrigation area, and fixed main pipe and movable branch and laterals. All these have reduced the cost to 917 USD/ha, only half of the cost of conventional system. The economic type of sprinkler and drip have been used for irrigation of bamboo shoots, pear tree, grape, water melon, vegetable and flower, etc. The benefitted land amounted to 874 ha in the end of 2004. The income has increased by 774 USD/ha. This technique has also been used for lowering temperature of the chicken and rabbit farms that was welcomed by the farmers. The political measures for promoting sprinkler and drip were adopted on 3 aspects : the government organizes water resources engineers to carry out technical study, demonstration and extension; Government subsidizes farmers with 45% of project cost; and Government encourages enterprizes to produce water-saving irrigation products.
