DETERMINATION OF INDIGO IN DYEBATHS BY FLOW INJECTION ANALYSIS AND REDOX TITRATIONS

FIA of indigo was very effective in determining indigo concentration. It provided a means to obtain reproducible results in laboratory dyeing runs that simulated continuous indigo dyeing on a range. Off-line titration of the dyebath provided values for indigo and hydrosulfite concentrations at five-minute intervals. Titration values for indigo were noisier than corresponding FIA values. Both methods provided an acceptable means for tracking indigo concentration with reasonable response time during a dyeing operation. Relative to titration, FIA provides a more automated and more rapid means of measuring indigo concentration without risking exposure of the reduced indigo to atmospheric oxygen. Although it was not investigated in this work, it is anticipated that FIA would have to be modified in order to remove the interference from a sulfur dye that might be applied before the indigo on a commercial range.
