The Norwegian Epic was delivered to NCL by STX France in Saint Nazaire in 2010 after having demonstrated its ability to meet the highest levels of standards in the cruise industry. This paper addresses in detail the performance levels achieved in the key technical areas of naval architecture: hydrodynamics, noise and vibration and stability. In the area of hydrodynamics, the efforts were mostly focused on the reduction of fuel consumption and the improvement of passenger comfort. Exceptional powering performance was achieved despite a high bloc coefficient imposed by the considerable capacity and deadweight of the ship. The hull form was optimized using state of the art CFD numerical codes to reduce resistance, while the integration of the appendages and propellers with careful adaptation of the hull form and ducktail provided excellent hull efficiency. After numerical evaluations and cavitation tests, the propeller design demonstrated very low pressure pulse levels. In the area of noise and vibration, the acoustic noise and vibration levels required in the different cabins and spaces required a detailed analysis of the excitation sources (propellers, diesels, noisy spaces..) as well as the structural response of the ship. The adaptation of the ship structure and the detailed specification of various sound insulation materials and mounting methods have allowed us to meet the specification to the satisfaction of the client and Class. The Norwegian Epic has been designed to meet to SOLAS2009 by anticipation. Explanatory notes not being finalised at that time, an interpretation document was established after discussions with DNV. Special NAPA managers have been developed by the yard to allow the control of the calculation sequences and to analyse the calculation results. This tool allows manages the intermediate stages of the flooding sequence following as close as possible the physical process. Appropriate measures have been taken on each piping or ventilation systems to prevent progressive flooding. These arrangements have been controlled on piping drawings and onboard on the basis of a check-list. In addition to the many new and exciting features for a cruise vessel, the Norwegian Epic is above all an outstanding ship.
