The use of survival crafts following alternative design rules provide ship yards and owners with the possibility of a competitiveness advantage due to the prospects of implementing flexible design of passenger vessels. For ships coming into service after 1 July 2010, IMO prepared the track of implementing alternative solutions of LSA (SOLAS Ⅲ/38), as long as it can be demonstrated that in terms of safety the proposed design ("alternative design") is equivalent to a SOLAS-compliant design ("reference design"). The equivalence for LSA appliances is investigated by an engineering analysis (MSC 216(82)) in accordance with the "Guidelines on alternative design and arrangements for SOLAS chapters Ⅱ-1 and Ⅲ" (MSC.1/Circ.1212). In this paper the process of risk-based analysis of alternative design and arrangements is illustrated by example of the design of novel survival craft on a cruise ship. Due to the fact that regulators for the shipping industry have not yet specified absolute risk evaluation and risk acceptance criteria, a common approach is to perform a comparative risk analysis. In such an analysis risk levels that are determined for SOLAS compliant designs are put in relation to risk levels that are determined for alternative designs. In order to obtain a holistic picture, these analyses are not only focused on the survival crafts, but also on the relevant aspects of the ship design, as well as on operational aspects that are affected by the application of the novel crafts. From the ship yard's and lifeboat manufacturer's operational perspectives the practical experiences from the application of the alternative design process are described. From the technical perspective, the risk model that was developed for the analysis is explained and the experiences from the application of the model are reported.
