With the technological improvements it is possible to obtain more information about the environment around us. For the ship case it is very important for safety navigation. The accurate and clear information about the ship environment is crucial to navigate safely in accordance with the Collision Regulation (COLREGs) rules. The ships main navigational equipment is radar or Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA). Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a comparatively new equipment to obtain the ship data. Considering the statistical analysis of maritime casualties these equipment are not sufficient for safety navigation. Especially small vessels and fishing boats are out of the scope of these equipments. The authors proposed a stereo vision system for obstacle detection using two identical cameras. In this paper, we consider about the effect of some image processing techniques on efficiency of ship detection and tracking. The original images are in RGB color format. We compared the detection and tracking in red channel, gray scale and histogram equalized gray scale images.
