Effect of Phosphorus Slag on the Performance of Roller Compacted Concrete

As a kind of industrial wastes, phosphorus slag has high pozzolanic reactivity and is almost in every province in China. This paper studied the effect of phosphorus slag on the performance of roller compacted concrete. The results shows that the setting time of roller compacted concrete would been delayed since adding phosphorus slag to the roller compacted concrete, and this phenomenon will be more obvious if adding more phosphorus slag. At this paper, if phosphorus slag dosage was 45%, then the initial setting time would be about 236% times of that of roller compacted concrete without phosphorus slag, and the final setting time would be about 207% times. Adding phosphorus slag to the cement, the heat of hydration of cementitious materials would be reduced. In this test, as phosphorus slag content was 45%, the heat of hydration at 3 d was 62. 8% that of the pure cement without adding phosphorus slag, as well as, the heat of hydration at 7 d was 76. 0%. Consequently the adiabatic temperature rise would be reduced. Early strength of roller compacted concrete mixed with proper content of phosphorus slag maybe lower, but the long-term strength would be higher than the reference concrete. This showed that phosphorus slag has high pozzolanic reactivity. Adding phosphorus slag to the roller compacted concrete would increase the ultimate tensile value and reduce the modulus of compressive elastic, and accordingly the crack resistance of roller compacted concrete could be improved. It maybe increase the drying shrinkage of concrete in early age by adding phosphorus slag, however, the drying shrinkage was as same as that of the reference concrete at the age of 90 d. Therefore, phosphorus slag is especially suitable for mass concrete.
