A study was made to identify the optimum plan that minimizes the costs of inspection, repair and reinforcement for reinforced concrete structures, using genetic algorithms (GAs). With reinforced concrete structures, their strength decreases with time due to salt damage, neutralization or other factors, and then safety and functionality also deteriorate. At present, therefore, regular inspections are made according to the maintenance and inspection manuals and the structures are repaired or reinforced based on the inspection results so as to ensure that their strength exceeds the structural requirement. In this study, an attempt was made to extract the cheapest inspection, repair and reinforcement strategy using inspection intervals and the methods and timing of repiar and reinforcement as parameters, under the restriction of keeping the safety and functionality of structures above the structurally required goals.
