This paper presents a new method for calculating the probability of failure of a structural system:"Mode Step Analysis" (MSA). A detailed presentation of the mechanics of MSA is given, including a concise explanation of equations involved. MSA simplifies the consideration of component failrue dependence by utilizing the fact that failure modes, which are characterized by unique paths, often have common mode staes (i.e."damaged states"). The probability of exclusive failrue of a structural component, for each mode state in the failure path, is fundamenal to MSA. An example steel connection is used to clarify the application of MSA. The simple bounds of the example are also calculated. It is found that the system probability of failure calculated ith MSA can be significantly differnet than the reliability obtained using simple bounds.
