This paper presents a summary of an effort to develop a simplified probabilistic version of roadway pavement maintenance code. Several determinate versions of the code have been used to decide the asphalt concrete pavement. But, some decisions for rehabilitation alternatives were often purely man-made or wishful thinking, because there exist a lot of uncertainties asociated in pavement performance indexes and therefore the pavement evalaution indexes. It was determined that substantial savings in maintenance costs can be obtained by keeping pavement condition from reaching a stochastic range or at least by prjolonging the period before this range is reached. Therefore, a probabilistic manner of selecting maintenance activities for pavement is an urgent subject in the pavement management, especially in developing countries. Statistical characteristics of pavement perfomrance/evaluation indexes and maintenance criteria were studied from the point of view of statistics, with an example of Shenda Expressway, in this paper.
