On new treatment of modeling uncertainty in the framework of LRFD

The aim of the present study is to incorporate model uncertainty into the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) format which is quite practical. Proposed here is that these model parameter uncertainties can be practically and effectively treated with the aid of the classical structural reliability theory which has been utilized so far to establish LRFD checking formats and design criteria. Factors associated with the model uncertainties are newly introduced like the ordinary load and resistance factors, provided that the model uncertianty can be dealt with in a probabilistic manner. Then, the ordinary first-order reliability method (FORM) can handle limti state functions involving rnadom variables includign the model uncertainty, and the resutls turn out to be the concept of the desing point in a hyper space. Then, the design pont can be translated into the desing checking format with additional factors to incorporate the model uncertainty. Some numerical examples are provided for seismic loading.
