In this paper an optimum design procedure for minimizing structural mass and vertical deflections of loaded joints subject to reliability constraints is discussed. The fuzzy optimization technique based on the principle of intersection of fuzzy decision proposed by Bellamn & Zadeh (1970) is used for the multiobjective fuzzy optimization of trusses. Loads and constraints are represented by fuzzy numbers. The formulation of the fuzzy reliability-based optimization procedure is illustrated by two numerical examples of a five a ten-bar truss. Member cross-sectional reas are defined as deisng variables. The proposed methodology can be employed for structural optimization problems involving vectors of conflicting objective functions with crisp or fuzzy loads and constraints.
