This paper describes an appraoch to cmbining results from event-based tropical cyclone simulation with statistical analyses of extreme wind speeds from extratropical cyclones and thunderstorms to characterize the wind climate and evalaute desing wind speeds. The state of South Carolina, located along the southeast coast of the United States, is used as a case study. A transition zone is defined separating the region in which the wind climate is characterized by tropical cyclones and the region controlled extratropical wind speeds.
