A Clustered VNF Chaining Scheme with Delay Guarantees in NFV-Based VANETs

Recently, there are many new automotive products equipped with intelligent onboard systems (IOSs) to obtain varieties of convenient services. However, the closed architecture of IOSs makes it difficult and costly to upgrade the IOS for supporting new services, where network function virtualization (NFV) is introduced to tackle this problem by virtualizing the functions of IOS as software applications. Furthermore, the openness of IOS supports reuse of virtualized network functions (VNFs), which builds service chains orderly, among vehicles. Thus, it is imperative to set up the service chains applicable. In this paper, we provide a clustered VNF chaining scheme which computes the optimal cluster size to minimize the average service time (AST) of the network. The scheme is applied to both circle scenario and real traffic lane scenario, which is demonstrated in the numerical experiments. The simulation results also show the proposed scheme reduces 68% and 36% AST compared to RD-wop and PD- woc, respectively.
